Smart lockers in parks, sports fields, and neighborhoods. Concrete implementations that cities and municipalities are already realizing with UrbanCubby.
From sports fields to neighborhood projects, concrete implementations that show how UrbanCubby works in your context.
The square was recently completely redeveloped, with a strong focus on social interaction and public space. With Cubby, we make sports and play equipment easily accessible to local residents and young people.
The goal is to further activate the square as a meeting place and create stronger connections within the neighborhood.
The installation makes sports and play equipment easily accessible for the neighborhood and encourages the use of public space by both youth and residents.
Through local input, it is assessed which materials best match the needs of the area, with the aim of activating the neighborhood and stimulating positive interactions.
The UrbanCubby at Miriam Makebaplein focuses specifically on young children and young parents. The offering is tailored to this target group with materials such as balance bikes, scooters, bean bags, buckets, and a rubber kubb game.
The installation is located at a strategic spot near the iconic Winter Circus and the De Krook library, two highly visited landmarks in the city.
This helps reactivate the square as an accessible and lively public space where play, movement, and social interaction are central.
The skatepark in Zuidpark provides an ideal environment to combine urban sports and movement with additional fitness equipment.
The offering focuses on strength and street workout equipment such as battle ropes, a weight set, barbells, and kettlebells. Additionally, local skaters are consulted to determine which extra materials can further enhance the park experience.
The installation is fully autonomous with a solar panel and anchored into the ground using screw piles, making it flexible without requiring permanent interventions in the public space.
Rabotpark, located near Minus One and youth center Özburun, is a lively site with strong sports and youth engagement in the surrounding area. The existing infrastructure is perfectly suited for activities such as basketball, football, and other outdoor sports.
Through this UrbanCubby, sports and play equipment is made available on-site, allowing visitors to easily switch between different activities in the park. Basketball is particularly popular as an accessible activity at this location.
A unique feature of this site is the inclusion of personal storage: one locker is specifically reserved for visitors who want to store their own belongings. Runners and walkers especially use this to safely store backpacks, water bottles, and other personal items during their activities.
Rabotpark continues to develop into a multifunctional meeting place where sports, youth work, and daily recreation come together.
The official launch of the project took place here, together with the Alderman of Sports and local partners.
Pierkespark, located in Brugse Poort, is situated in a vibrant neighborhood with a mix of community organizations and local facilities. Nearby, there is a second-hand shop, a coffee house, the Trafiek community hall, the organization Bij’ De Vieze Gasten, and various local hospitality venues such as a Moroccan restaurant. This mix creates a strong social hub within the district.
The UrbanCubby at this location strengthens this existing dynamic by making sports and play equipment easily accessible in the public space, encouraging interaction between residents.
The recently redeveloped park is further activated as an open, inclusive, and connecting space where different communities come together and make more intensive use of the public environment.
The Watersportbaan is one of the most well-known sports and recreational zones in the city. Around the large water loop, there is space for running, exercising, and relaxing, with a strong focus on outdoor movement and recreational use for various target groups.
At this location, an UrbanCubby has been installed that complements the existing sports infrastructure. There is a volleyball court, a basketball court, and a large grass field where accessible sports such as football and CUP are often played.
The UrbanCubby allows users to easily borrow sports and play equipment on-site, further strengthening the existing dynamics and making them more accessible to a wider audience.
Corridor is home to Sportaround vzw and forms a unique urban sports hub under the E17 viaduct in Gentbrugge. The site transformed a formerly vacant area into a vibrant meeting place where sport, play, and community come together.
Under the viaduct, there is space for a wide range of activities such as football, basketball, skating, boxing, and urban movement. It is a place where young people and residents gather daily to exercise and connect.
Within this project, an UrbanCubby was installed to further complement the available sports and play materials and make them easily accessible. This strengthens the existing activities of Sportaround and allows the infrastructure to be used more broadly by the neighborhood and partners.
Corridor is a strong example of how temporary and shared infrastructure can evolve into a sustainable and inclusive sports space in the city.
Coyendanspark is a green urban park with strong historical value, located near Saint Bavo’s Abbey and Portus Ganda. The site reflects the medieval past of the city and is now part of a calm yet well-used public space where heritage, nature, and interaction meet.
Through this project, the park is strengthened as an accessible neighborhood space where sports, play, and social interaction are made possible in a low-threshold way via UrbanCubby.
The park is further activated as a high-quality public space where relaxation, movement, and social interaction are central within Ghent’s urban context.
At the renovated Kantienberg campus, an UrbanCubby will be installed to respond to daily student life and the many “dead moments” on campus. Instead of spending time passively, students will have easy access to sports and play equipment to stay active together.
The campus is located in a busy and central student area where movement, interaction, and campus life are already strong. The UrbanCubby seamlessly adds an extra layer to the existing infrastructure.
Artevelde University of Applied Sciences is also a partner in the broader Flanders Circular initiative and supports research into new business models around shared use. At this site, research is conducted on sustainable models for borrowing sports and play equipment, including whether users are willing to pay for higher-quality materials and which pricing models are feasible and scalable within a campus environment.
This site therefore functions not only as an activation space but also as a testing environment for further rollout and economic integration of the UrbanCubby concept.
At this campus location of Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, an UrbanCubby is integrated into a more enclosed part of the site, ensuring that only students have access to the system. The focus is on activating students during class transitions and short breaks.
Instead of these moments being passive, the project promotes spontaneous and accessible sports activities within the campus environment. The offering is tailored to quick group activities such as volleyball and badminton, with equipment like a volleyball net and badminton net that can easily be set up between classes.
This location builds on the research and innovation aspect of the project, testing how shared sports and play materials can influence behavior on campus and contribute to increased movement, interaction, and connection among students.
This final pilot site serves as both a conclusion and an experimental phase within the project, with a strong focus on usage, behavioral impact, and scalability in a campus setting.
