UrbanCubby • Use cases

Projects that are already running.

From city parks and skateparks to school campuses, community gardens and village squares: every UrbanCubby is tailored to its location and the people who use it.

Location-oriented

Each location gets a tailored use case: from sports fields to neighbourhood projects and events.

Modular deployment

UrbanCubby integrates alongside existing infrastructure, without permanent interventions.

Activation & impact

A lower barrier to physical activity, more social interaction and livelier public space.

Where we are live

Every location has its own story.

These are UrbanCubby projects realised with cities, municipalities and partners.

UrbanCubby in Dendermonde – Pater Ruttenplein
Dendermonde

Pater Ruttenplein

City of Dendermonde · local youth outreach workers

In collaboration with the City of Dendermonde and local youth outreach workers, we realised a Cubby installation at Pater Ruttenplein. The square was recently completely redeveloped, with a strong focus on social interaction and public space.

With Cubby, sports and play equipment is easily accessible to local residents and young people. The goal is to further activate the square as a meeting place and create stronger connections within the neighbourhood.

UrbanCubby in Dendermonde – Baasrode
Dendermonde

Baasrode

City of Dendermonde · Uit de Marge vzw

In Baasrode we worked together with the City of Dendermonde and youth organisation Uit de Marge vzw to install an UrbanCubby in the public space.

Local input decides which materials best match the needs of the area, with the aim of activating the neighbourhood and stimulating positive interactions.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Miriam Makebaplein
Ghent

Miriam Makebaplein

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular

One of the ten pilot sites within a large-scale project. This UrbanCubby focuses specifically on young children and young parents, with balance bikes, scooters, bean bags, buckets and a rubber kubb game.

The installation sits near the Winter Circus and the De Krook library, helping to reactivate the square as an accessible and lively public space.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Zuidpark (skatepark)
Ghent

Zuidpark (skatepark)

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular

The second of ten pilot locations. The skatepark combines urban sports with additional fitness equipment: battle ropes, a weight set, barbells and kettlebells. Local skaters are consulted on which extra materials enhance the park.

The installation is fully autonomous with a solar panel and anchored with screw piles, making it flexible without permanent interventions in the public space.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Rabotpark
Ghent

Rabotpark

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular

Located near Minus One and youth centre Özburun, Rabotpark is a lively site with strong sports and youth engagement. Basketball is especially popular here.

A unique feature of this site is personal storage: one locker is reserved for visitors who want to store their own belongings — runners and walkers use it for backpacks and water bottles.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Pierkespark (Brugse Poort)
Ghent

Pierkespark (Brugse Poort)

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular

The fourth location within the pilot project, where the official launch took place together with the Alderman of Sports and local partners.

Pierkespark sits in a vibrant neighbourhood with a second-hand shop, a coffee house, community hall Trafiek, Bij' De Vieze Gasten and local hospitality venues — a strong social hub that the UrbanCubby strengthens.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Watersportbaan
Ghent

Watersportbaan

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular

The fifth location within the pilot project. The Watersportbaan is one of the best-known sports and recreational zones in the city, with space for running, exercising and relaxing around the water loop.

The UrbanCubby complements the volleyball court, basketball court and large grass field, making the existing infrastructure accessible to a wider audience.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Buurtpark Ham (Fluvius site)
Ghent

Buurtpark Ham (Fluvius site)

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular · OCUP vzw

The sixth location, on the former Fluvius site — an area with a closed, industrial character that is gradually being turned into a temporary neighbourhood park.

Together with OCUP vzw an UrbanCubby was placed to strengthen this temporary facility and give residents easy access to sports and play equipment.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Corridor (Gentbrugge)
Ghent

Corridor (Gentbrugge)

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular · Sportaround vzw

The seventh location. Corridor is an urban sports hub under the E17 viaduct, where a formerly vacant area became a vibrant meeting place for football, basketball, skating, boxing and urban movement.

The UrbanCubby complements the available materials and lets the infrastructure be used more broadly by the neighbourhood and partners.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Coyendanspark
Ghent

Coyendanspark

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular

The eighth location: a green urban park with strong historical value near Saint Bavo's Abbey and Portus Ganda.

The park is strengthened as an accessible neighbourhood space where sport, play and social interaction happen in a low-threshold way.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Campus Kantienberg (Artevelde University of Applied Sciences)
Ghent

Campus Kantienberg (Artevelde University of Applied Sciences)

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular · Artevelde University of Applied Sciences

The ninth location responds to daily student life and the many “dead moments” on campus, giving students easy access to sports and play equipment.

Artevelde is also a partner in the broader Flanders Circular initiative: this site doubles as a research environment into sustainable models for borrowing equipment and which pricing models are feasible and scalable on a campus.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – Brusselsepoortstraat
Ghent

Brusselsepoortstraat

City of Ghent · Flanders Circular · Artevelde University of Applied Sciences

The tenth and final pilot location, integrated into a more enclosed part of the campus so only students have access.

The offering is tailored to quick group activities between classes, such as volleyball and badminton, with nets that are easy to set up.

UrbanCubby in Tervuren – Town hall Het Centrum
Tervuren

Town hall Het Centrum

Municipality of Tervuren

On the lively market square, the town hall “Het Centrum” is a central meeting point with high daily foot traffic, housing administrative services, a library and a cultural hall.

Combined with the nearby Park of Tervuren and local businesses, it is an ideal spot for an UrbanCubby in a place where people gather, relax and pass through.

UrbanCubby in Tervuren – Spechtenlaan, Moorsel
Tervuren

Spechtenlaan, Moorsel

Municipality of Tervuren

In a quiet residential neighbourhood, an UrbanCubby was installed under a covered structure near sports hall De Steenberg and youth centre De Kaaf.

Thanks to the covered installation the equipment stays protected and accessible, letting the location grow into a permanent meeting and play zone.

UrbanCubby in Duisburg – Chiro field
Duisburg

Chiro field

Local youth movement

The field at Chiro Duisburg is a popular gathering space where young people and residents come together to play and relax.

The UrbanCubby makes equipment such as kubb, spikeball and football easily accessible, so the field becomes even more a place where people connect and stay active.

UrbanCubby in Vossem – Pastory petanque courts
Vossem

Pastory petanque courts

Municipality of Tervuren

Next to the historic pastor's house, public petanque courts serve as a permanent meeting place for local residents in a calm green setting.

The UrbanCubby adds extra play equipment to the existing facilities and strengthens the sense of community at this location.

Oudenaarde

Hazel — social housing & community play hub

City of Oudenaarde

In this social housing neighbourhood the focus is on affordable living and stronger community connections, with a mix of housing, open public space and new neighbourhood sports initiatives.

The UrbanCubby gives residents — especially children and young people — barrier-free access to sports and play equipment, borrowed autonomously through simple digital access without permanent supervision.

UrbanCubby in Hemiksem – Town hall square
Hemiksem

Town hall square

Municipality of Hemiksem

The area around the town hall already offers a significant amount of public sports infrastructure, but much of it remained underused due to limited visibility and access to equipment.

With UrbanCubby residents can borrow sports and play materials on site, lowering the barrier to participation and turning the square into a more dynamic and socially active space.

UrbanCubby in Grobbendonk – Town hall zone
Grobbendonk

Town hall zone

Municipality of Grobbendonk

The UrbanCubby is installed near the town hall, close to Zomerbar Lambert along Boudewijnstraat — a central civic space where services, leisure and temporary initiatives come together.

The municipality strengthens the year-round usability of the site by enabling easy access to sports and play equipment directly in the public space.

UrbanCubby in Ghent – WZC De Liberteyt — intergenerational community garden
Ghent

WZC De Liberteyt — intergenerational community garden

WZC De Liberteyt · Cera “Steun aan de Samenleving”

An UrbanCubby was installed in the front garden of the care home, a shared meeting space between residents and the surrounding neighbourhood, on a campus that combines residential care, social housing and public space.

By making sports and play equipment available in the communal garden, the space is activated for movement and interaction between older residents and neighbours. The project was made possible with support from Cera.
